Simpson kills Delaware from outside

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – Amy Simpson made four 3-pointers in the first half and finished with 17 points as North Carolina State ruined Delaware's first trip to the NCAA Tournament with a 76-57 victory in the opening round of the East Regional on Friday night.

N.C. State (21-10) improved to 9-2 in NCAA Tournament games at Reynolds Coliseum and advanced to the second round for the fifth time in the last seven years. The Wolfpack face Villanova in the second round Sunday.

Simpson hit three straight 3-pointers during a 10-2 run in the final three minutes of the first half. She was 4-for-5 from 3-point range and had 13 points in the first half as the Wolfpack took a 36-27 lead.

The Wolfpack scored the first seven points of the second half and built the lead to 55-35 on a layup by Simpson with 14:09 left. N.C. State hit 17 of 29 shots in the second half.

Delaware (26-5) hit just nine of 26 shots in the first half, including seven straight misses midway through, and shot 36 percent overall.

Delaware leading scorer Cindy Johnson had 20 points on 7-of-20 shooting.
