Lady Vols land premier recruit

 Associated Press

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Forward Shyra Ely, considered the nation's top high school prospect, and four other players have chosen to play for Tennessee.

Ely, of Ben Davis High School in Indianapolis, announced her decision to sign with Tennessee after a scrimmage Wednesday night. She had visited Purdue, Ohio State and Georgia.

"It was so hard emotionally," Ely said of her decision. "The deciding factor for me was I would probably be better off at Tennessee. I think Pat Summitt can push us to the next level. With her program and her personality, I can get to the next level."

Ely averaged 19.6 points and 11.8 rebounds per game last season.

Also signing with Tennessee on Wednesday: Loree Moore of Narbonne High School in Harbor City, Calif.; Courtney Young of Buena High School in Ventura, Calif.; Brittany Jackson of Bradley Central High School in Cleveland; and Michelle Munoz of Mason High School in Mason, Ohio.

In other SEC signings, Georgia landed three players Wednesday, the first day of the weeklong NCAA early signing period.

The Lady Bulldogs received scholarship papers from Katie Frye, a 6-foot forward from Pickens County High School in Jasper; Jessica Pierce, a 6-2 forward from Washington High School in Pensacola, Fla.; and Whitney Law, a 5-11 guard from Chatfield High School in Littleton, Colo.

"These three players all possess the versatility required to play the style of basketball we enjoy playing," Georgia coach Andy Landers said. "Each of them can play more than one position."
