Ragland, Turner Thorne also honored

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- Junior guard Felicia Ragland of Oregon State has been named the Pacific-10 Conference Player of the Year.

Guard Nicole Powell of Stanford was named Freshman of the Year and Arizona State's Charli Turner Thorne won Coach of the Year honors, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced Monday.

Ragland helped lead Oregon State to its best record (16-12) since 1995-96. She is a two-time All-Pac-10 selection and the third Oregon State player to earn Pac-10 Player of the Year honors. Through the regular season, Ragland led the Pac-10 in scoring with a 19.9 average.

Ragland also ranks fifth in rebounding (7.5 rpg), third in steals (2.61 spg), first in 3-point FG percentage (.466) and third in 3-pointers made (2.21). She shattered the Oregon State single-season school record with 62 3-pointers this season (old record was 43). In Pac-10 play, Ragland posted five double-doubles. She has notched double figures in scoring in 25 games this season.

The rest of the players to make the all-conference team were: Stanford's Powell, Arizona's Reshea Bristol and Elizabeth Pickney, Washington's Megan Franza, UCLA's Michelle Greco, Cal's Courtney Johnson, Arizona State's Melody Johnson and Amanda Stevens and Oregon's Angelina Wolvert. Franza and Ragland are two-time honorees.

Powell is the second consecutive and fourth Stanford player to be named Pac-10 Freshman of the Year, joining Jamie Carey (1999-2000), Val Whiting (1989-90) and Rachel Hemmer (1991-92). She has helped Stanford to a share of its 10th Pac-10 title and the team's 14th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.

Powell, who has started the last 19 games at point guard following the season-ending ACL injury to Susan King, recorded just the third triple-double in Stanford history and seventh in Pac-10 history at Washington State on Feb. 22 (10 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists). She leads the Pac-10 in rebounding (8.5 rpg) and is attempting to become the first freshman in Pac-10 history to lead the league in that category.

Fifth-year coach Turner Thorne has guided the Sun Devils to a share of their first ever Pac-10 title and their first NCAA Tournament berth since 1991-92. After a seventh-place Pac-10 finish last season, Turner Thorne turned her program into one of the conference's top teams (12-6), maintaining sole possession of first place for the majority of the season and posting a 20-10 overall record, the team's first 20-win season in nine years.

Turner Thorne's squad, which features four starters who are newcomers, cracked the AP Top 25 on Feb. 5 for the first time since 1991-92, and was ranked for four straight weeks, marking the program's first consecutive rankings since 1982-83. She guided her team to a school-record seven straight Pac-10 wins (Jan. 11 to Feb. 8), ASU's longest overall winning streak since 1991-92.

The Sun Devils lead the Pac-10 in scoring defense (60.8 ppg) and rebounding defense (33.6 ppg). Turner Thorne is a former guard for Stanford (1984-88).

Arizona State's Betsy Boardman, USC's Ebony Hoffman, Arizona's Veranda James and Washington's Giuliana Mendiola rounded out the Pac-10 All-Freshman team.
