SEATTLE (AP) -- Sabine Loewe scored 17 points and Brandi Collatto
posted 12, shooting 4 for 5 from 3-point range, as the San Diego
Toreros rolled over Pennsylvania 70-59 Sunday in the consolation
contest of the Husky Classic.
Washington faces Rice in the final round.
After taking a 19-point deficit into the half, the Quakers (1-3)
slowly clawed back into contention late in the contest. With all 10
of her points coming in the second half, Penn forward Ashley Gray
scored with 3:14 remaining to cut the score to 61-57.
No matter. The Toreros (2-3) went back to Loewe, who answered
with an 8-footer from the baseline. Loewe, a 6-foot-4 center from
Germany, finished with 7-for-11 shooting, the leader in a balanced
attack in which all 10 Toreros posted points.
San Diego shot 52 percent from the game, 47 percent from behind
the arc. Off the bench, guard Amanda Rego added 11 assists.
The Toreros also managed to shut down Penn forward Jennifer
Fleischer, who had all 11 points and seven rebounds in the first
half. Fleischer led the Quakers in scoring along with guard Lauren
Pears, who also posted 11 points, going 4 for 5 from the field.
In the opening minutes of the contest, San Diego broke open a
quick lead, snagging 10 more rebounds than Penn in the opening 20
Penn scored with 1:36 remaining in the first half to close
within 10. But the Toreros went on a late 9-point tear, and guard
Tiara Harris scored on three fast breaks in the final 61 seconds of
the half to put the Toreros up 39-20.
