AKRON, Ohio (AP) -- Freshman Niki McCoy recorded 21 points and
five assists Thursday night, leading Akron to a 73-60 victory over
Montana State in Rhodes Arena.
Montana State (0-4) trailed 43-29 at the 11:55 mark of the
second stanza. The Bobcats went on a 23-10 run to close to within
53-52 on a Whitney Connolly three-pointer with 6:57 left.
Akron (1-3) answered with a 14-5 run over the next five minutes
to put the game away.
"Akron was a lot more physical than we were, and I hate to say
that because it deals with effort," MSU head coach Tricia Binford
said. "We had a lot of mental breakdowns. We'll regroup tomorrow
and look forward to the challenge of Kent State."
Alyssa Nelson led MSU with a career-matching 18 points. She
connected on 7-of-16 from the field, while adding four assists and
three steals. Also in double figures for the Bobcats was Jenny
Heringer with 11 points, including three 3-pointers.
For the game, the Bobcats shot 38 percent from the field and had
a season-high eight 3-pointers.
The Zips shot at a 54-percent clip, including a 6-of-11 effort
from long distance.
Akron held a 39-33 advantage under the boards. MSU was led in
rebounding by Anne Phippard and Nubia Garcia with seven each.
