Shimek breaks MSU rebounding record in Spartan win

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Liz Shimek scored 22 points and set a
school record for rebounds in a career, leading Michigan State (No. 13 ESPN/USA Today; No. 11 AP) to a
75-53 victory over Penn State on Thursday night.

Shimek had 18 points and seven of her eight rebounds in the
second half for the Spartans (11-3, 2-0 Big Ten), who closed
out the victory with a 20-0 run. The senior forward has 968 career
rebounds, four more than the previous mark set by WNBA player
Kristen Rasmussen.

Rene Haynes added a season-best 14 points, and Victoria Lucas
Perry added 14 as Michigan State won its 21st straight home game.

Lindsay Bowen had eight points and moved past Rasmussen into
fourth place on the Spartans' career scoring list with 1,495
points. She added seven assists.

Penn State (6-8, 0-3) had four players in double figures. Kamela
Gissendanner scored 17 points, Amanda Brown 15 before fouling out,
Adrienne Squire 11, and Brianne O'Rourke finished with 10.

Michigan State led 36-28 at halftime and 45-32 with 16:28 left,
but the Lady Lions chipped away with three 3-pointers and closed
within 55-53.

The Spartans controlled the game in the last 6:45, tightening
its defensive pressure and getting eight points from Shimek.
