Rutgers squanders big lead but holds on to win

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) -- Cappie Pondexter scored 24 points and
No. 9 Rutgers held off No. 25 St. John's 61-51 Wednesday night
after squandering a 27-point lead.

Rutgers (16-3, 8-0 Big East) built a 33-6 cushion with 5:04 left
in the first half, but St. John's outscored the Scarlet Knights
17-2 to close the half and then scored the first eight points after
halftime to cut the gap to 35-31.

St. John's (17-4, 7-3), which moved into the Top 25 this week
for the first time in 22 years, was within four with 3:52 to play
when Rutgers' Michelle Campbell hit Kia Vaughn with a pass in the
lane for a layup. Vaughn was fouled and completed a three-point
play for a 49-42 edge.

The Scarlet Knights then showed their experience, controlling
the clock and extending their margin as St. John's committed four
turnovers in the final minutes.

Vaughn added 15 points for Rutgers.

Angela Clark, Danielle Chambers and Kia Wright scored 10 points
apiece for the Red Storm.
