New nickname for the new kid

(Editor's note: Duke's Caitlin Howe, a a freshman guard, will share a diary with ESPN.com throughout the season.)

Jan. 25, 2003

Caitlin Howe
Howe
Well, I am no longer known to my teammates and coaches as Caitlin. Thanks to the imagination of Iciss Tillis, my nickname is C.C.

Go ahead guess what it stands for (and no, the first C isn't for Caitlin). I know y'all are anxious to know so I'll tell ... it stands for Crazy Cait. I swear I have no idea how she thought of it! Okay, maybe I have some idea. One of the clues is that Iciss thought of it while we were lifting in the weight room. For anyone who has worked out with me before, you know I tend to get a little noisy when I lift weights. I grunt pretty loudly -- it helps get that weight moving!

Sometimes they get rid of the Cait and just call me Crazy. C.C. has been officially ordained as my new nickname.

We've had some close ACC games and on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we added another to that list as we traveled only a few minutes down the road to play UNC, our traditional rival. It was an intense game, which we ended up winning in overtime. The best part about the game was the crowd. We had a powerful little section of Duke fans behind our bench (y'all are awesome) who tried mightily to compete with nearly 10,000 fans wearing that baby blue. At certain points in the game, the whole arena shook -- it was electric.

Maybe you have noticed (I'm sure my acquaintances in the north have) that I used "y'all" twice in this entry. I actually used it the other day in conversation. Tiffany, my roommate who is from North Carolina, gives me a hard time because she claims that I have more of Southern accent than she does. Well, Tiff, I'm using it and I like it!

Other news: Iciss Tillis scored her 1,000 career point this week, so if you see her, tell her congratulations and that she should pay me the $20 that she owes me. We play Florida State tomorrow. Don't make plans for Feb. 1 because we play UConn on ESPN2 (7 p.m. ET) -- so watch.

I played in my first full practice this week -- I loved it!

Y'all have a good week!

C.C.
