One seeks job, other puts pen to paper

(Editor's note: Duke senior Michele Matyasovsky, a member of the 2002 NCAA Tournament All-East Region team, and freshman Caitlin Howe, a 3-point specialist, will share weekly diaries with ESPN.com throughout the season.)

DUKE DIARIES
JOB WANTED
Michele Matyasovsky

Michele Matyasovsky Feb. 9, 2003 -- Hey everyone! I would first like to apologize because I have taken so long to write this diary entry. I have been extremely busy and stressed searching for jobs, and my brain has been somewhat frozen because of all the cold weather we have been having!

I know I shouldn't be complaining considering there are many other schools that are facing harsher winters, but one of the reasons I came to Duke was to escape frigid weather! There was a break through last week and we had some 60-degree days, which enabled Vicki and I to go to the golf range and try out our new clubs!

Anyway, nothing too exciting has happened on our team recently, but I'll give you at least one team updates:

For those of you that were at the Clemson game or heard about Iciss' fall on the ground, she is OK. Our team definitely gave her the "dramatic play of the game" award as she rolled around on the ground grabbing her butt. Coach G walked out on the court and started laughing once she realized the reason Iciss was laying on the ground was because she fell so hard and has no fat on her butt to cushion her fall!!! Don't you just wish you had that problem?! I think her rehab should consist of eating more doughnuts and sitting on the couch so her butt gets bigger!

I also wanted to take time to say thank you to all the people who came to Cameron to support us for the UConn game. Our team was so excited and appreciative for everyone's enthusiasm. Personally, it was just a great feeling to be able to play in front of a sold out crowd at home! And although we didn't come away with the win, we have learned a lot about our weaknesses, which will only help us further down the road!

Well, I have to go work on a paper and add some things to my résumé! If anyone is looking to hire a very intelligent, creative, dedicated, hard-working individual, with incredible communication skills, just let me know! :-)

One more thing ... I just wanted to let everyone know that I got a new cell phone, so I don't have to be ghetto and tape the battery together anymore! Ha ha!!!

  POETRY IN MOTION
Caitlin Howe

Caitlin Howe Feb. 9, 2003 -- To show my creative side (or my lack thereof; that's for you to decide), I opted to write a poem about playing UConn at home. It was truly an experience; the competition was fierce and the fans were amazing (especially the Cameron Crazies!).

February the first on Saturday night,
The Crazies came to play their role in this fight.
It was a legendary matchup; No. 1 vs. No. 2.
Who was to win, Duke or UConn, nobody knew.
Cameron was so full; not a seat was bare.
When I saw the huge crowd, all I could do was stare.
The first sellout crowd for a women's game ever,
Cameron Indoor Stadium this loud I had heard never.

The fans came into the gym and out of the dark,
Some were dressed in costumes (you're the Man, Marc!!).*
Cameron Crazies overflowed the bleachers,
The blue paint was still wet that covered their features.
Their cheers were many and creative to boot,
A true Cameron Crazy would never be caught mute.
"LUIGI"** and "HUSKY WOMEN" they chanted aloud,
They got the attention of Taurasi, who couldn't help but grin at the crowd.

The gym was so loud that we couldn't hear Coach G.
Imagine, that was when we were down by 23!!
As the score got closer, and the time ticked away,
The Crazies let us know that they would never betray.
Our record was without a blemish; 20 and O,
But in the first half we couldn't get into the flow.
Our perfect, undefeated record would not survive,
The final score in favor of UConn was 77 to 65.
The game was broadcast on ESPN2,
And after the game the Blue Devils have never looked so blue.
Just wait 'til we meet those Huskies again,
I know we will, the only question that remains is when?

We have the best fans in the college game,
And I know UConn wishes that they had the same.
With all their chanting, cheering, and blue paint on their chest,
Admit it Geno,…the Cameron Crazies are the BEST!
Even though the loss may make a true fan want to puke,
I have a cure: repeat the chant "Rip 'em Up, Tear 'em Up, Give 'em Hell, Duke!"

(Note: * Marc Thompson, a sophomore at Duke, came dressed as Mario from the video game Mario Brothers. ** The Crazies referred to UConn coach Geno Auriemma as "Luigi" from Mario Brothers.)
