(Editor's note: Texas Tech senior forward Plenette Pierson, a former Big 12 Freshman of the Year, will share a weekly diary with ESPN.com throughout the season.) Dec. 23, 2002
We played two games, the first against Tennessee-Chattanooga, which resulted in a 13-point win. In this game our play was very sluggish, but at the end we were able to regain our composure and get a win. We then played in the championship game against Hawaii. This was a very tough game for us because of the foul count during the game, which kept our players on the bench instead of in the game, but we were able to pull it off. We won by 27 points, 67-40. At the end of the tournament, Jia Perkins was selected to the all-tournament team and I was selected MVP of the tournament. We had a lot of fans make the trip to Honolulu, which was awesome. It's nice that we can get so much support whether it is at home or on the road. After all the games were played, we had a chance to tour the city and do some more shopping on our own. Erin Grant and I took a shuttle from the hotel across town to another mall to look for some shoes. The shuttle bus driver told us a specific spot to meet and to look for two Ts on the side of the bus. When we were done shopping, the bus was supposed to pick us up at 2:30 p.m. at the same designated spot where we were dropped off. We arrived to the spot a little earlier than the designated time and began our wait. We were waiting and watching for the bus with the two Ts as the original driver told us. Unfortunately, we became a little nervous at approximately 2:29 p.m. and didn't see the bus. I asked Erin to call the shuttle company to see where the bus was, and while Erin was dialing the number I just openly said, "Watch this van parked in front of us be the one that we are supposed to be boarding." She only got the first ring on the phone before the gentleman sitting in the bus parked in front of us picked up his phone to answer it. Erin immediately hung the phone up. He then immediately came over to us and asked if we had just called to request information in shuttle pickup. As it turned out this was our shuttle and we were panicking that we were not going to get home and home could possibly be in Hawaii. We finally made it home on Monday and everyone is excited about the upcoming holiday and games. I can't wait to come back next week and tell you about the Southern Miss and Rice games. I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas. For more on Pierson and Texas Tech, visit the Lady Raiders' official athletic site. |
