The country's top point guards

By Beth Mowins
Special to ESPN.com

There are some great point guards out there this season, including two players who already are contending for preseason Player of the Year honors.

Here's a look at the top five point guards in the country (listed alphabetically):

TOP POINT GUARDS
Sue Bird*
Connecticut
WNBA coaches wanted to draft her last year. She's that good.
Stacey Dales*
Oklahoma
A coach on the floor, her best trait is probably her leadership.
Brandi McCain*
Florida
I get tired just watching opponents try to keep up with her.
Ashley McElhiney
Vanderbilt
Fiery leader who provides Vandy with some toughness.
Shaquala Williams
Oregon
Back from a knee injury and ready to prove she hasn't lost a step.
Breakout season: Lindsey Wilson, Iowa State
Fab Frosh: Clare Droesch, Boston College
* Player is a two-time selection who also was picked in our 2000-2001 season preview

ESPN play-by-play announcer Beth Mowins will contribute a bi-weekly women's college basketball feature throughout the season.
