Rutgers has zeroed in on Los Angeles Lakers assistant Eddie Jordan as a replacement for the fired Mike Rice now that Rhode Island coach Danny Hurley has turned down the school, multiple sources told ESPN.com.

A source with direct knowledge of the situation told ESPN.com that Jordan will meet face to face with Rutgers officials this weekend with the intent to finalize a deal to become the next coach.

Jordan will be on the Lakers' bench for Friday night's game against the Golden State Warriors, but won't be at Staples Center for Sunday's game against the San Antonio Spurs, according to the source.

Hurley was offered the job Monday and spent two days mulling the offer before deciding against leaving the Rams after one season. Hurley accepted an extension at Rhode Island on Thursday night to keep him at the school through the 2019-20 season.

Jordan played at Rutgers from 1973-77. He has coached in the NBA with the Sacramento Kings, Washington Wizards, Philadelphia 76ers and now the Lakers.

The 58-year-old Jordan played in the NBA from 1977-84 for five different teams.
