No MADD donation for Newark Bears

8/24/2011 - MLB New York Yankees

NEWARK, N.J. -- The Newark Bears have scrapped plans to donate $2,000 to Mothers Against Drunk Driving on behalf of former New York Yankees World Series star Jim Leyritz.

The planned donation had sparked controversy because the team
planned to announce it Thursday, the same night as a team-sponsored
beer pong tournament promotion.

The team said Wednesday that it canceled after MADD said it
would not accept the money.

Leyritz served as pitching coach for the Bears, who play in the
independent Can-Am League. He's leaving to spend more time with his family.

He was acquitted of felony drunk driving manslaughter charges
stemming from a 2007 crash in Florida, but was convicted of drunken
driving.

Leyritz told The Newark Star-Ledger that he didn't want to be
connected to any event that promoted consumption of alcohol.
