TAMPA, Fla. -- Despite a suddenly public personal life and being involved in a sensational stalking and extortion case, New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said he will have no problem doing his job.

"I have a professional and personal life," Cashman said on the day pitchers and catchers reported at Yankees spring training. "I will continue to do my job to the best of my abilities."

Cashman described the last three weeks as "difficult" after alleged details of his personal life have been splashed across New York's tabloids and the Internet. Cashman was involved in a sting that resulted in charges against 36-year-old Louise Neathway for harassing Cashman and threatening to harm his reputation if he didn't give her thousands of dollars.

Neathway's lawyers deny the charges. She is being held at Riker's Island.

Shortly after the charges were filed, Cashman's wife, Mary, filed for divorce in Stamford, Conn. The Associated Press, citing a person familiar with the family, says Cashman and his wife have been separated and living apart for a year. The person asked not to be named because of the private nature of the matter.

Cashman's bosses have completely supported him, as high-level officials with the team consider the matters personal.
