GM to contact David Wright's agents

NEW YORK -- New York Mets general manager Sandy Alderson acknowledged Tuesday night that he will reach out to David Wright's agents during the 2012 season.

Alderson did not say a formal offer would be presented, but he did not rule it out, either.

Wright is under the Mets' control through the 2013 season, including a team option for next year at $15 million.

"I think what I've said in that regard is that we certainly will talk to his agent sometime this season," Alderson said after the Mets beat the Phillies 6-3 on Tuesday at Citi Field. "I don't want to infer that we will make an offer; we won't make an offer. We expect to talk his agent this season certainly."

Wright, the longest tenured Met, is considered the face of the franchise. Despite being mired in a 1 for 18 skid, Wright's average nonetheless remains a National League best .370.

"So we'll talk to the agent this year," Alderson said. "I can't foresee exactly what will take place. But that's as far as I've gone at this point. We can talk about a lot of things that will come up short of an offer. And I'm not trying to suggest that we're going to make one or not make one or what have you. I've said we'd like to have David here long term. I stand by that statement."
