OAKLAND, Calif. -- New York Yankees outfielder Nick Swisher, sidelined with a mild strain of his left hip flexor, likely won't play until Friday.

The initial plan was to have Swisher possibly play in New York's three-game series against the Seattle Mariners, which starts Monday. But Yankees manager Joe Girardi seems to have ruled that out.

"(Swisher) said he wasn't as stiff today as he was yesterday," Girardi said before Sunday's series finale against the Oakland Athletics. "He's still day to day. My guess is we won't have him in Seattle and hope to get him back after that. We'll have to see."

That's a more conservative approach than Girardi and Swisher had discussed in the days since the outfielder suffered the injury in Friday night's loss to Oakland.

"It's not something where you want it to become a lot more than it is because you rush him back," Girardi said. "We'll see how he's feeling."

After their three-game series in Seattle, the Yankees have an off day Thursday before opening a homestand Friday against the Boston Red Sox.
