Phil Hughes to start Game 4

Phil Hughes will start Game 4 against the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday night.

There was speculation the Yankees would start CC Sabathia instead of Hughes in Game 4 if they were facing elimination, but manager Joe Girardi put an end to that before the game.

"Hughesy will start tomorrow," Girardi said before the Yankees beat the Orioles 3-2 in 12 innings on Wednesday in Game 3 of the AL Division Series.

Among Girardi's reasons for starting Hughes are the manager's preference to have Sabathia on full rest for a potential Game 5 on Friday, and his qualms about using Andy Pettitte on short rest if he went to Sabathia in Game 4.

Sabathia started Game 1 on Sunday, while Pettitte threw Game 2 on Monday. Joe Saunders will start Game 4 for the Orioles, the team announced after Wednesday night's game.
