NEW YORK -- Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira has taken his first swings -- in a pool -- as he ramps up his rehabilitation from a wrist injury.

Teixeira says the progression to playing in rehab games will be a slow one but he still hopes to be ready within the initial prognosis of eight to 10 weeks for recovery from a partially torn sheath in his right wrist.

Teixeira swung in chest-high water Tuesday after receiving clearance, and he was scheduled to take swings in the cage Wednesday without facing pitching.

Out since injuring his wrist with the U.S. on March 5 before the World Baseball Classic, the Gold Glover says he is very encouraged by his progress.

The switch hitter says he'll have to do all drills from each side of the plate.
