New York Jets rookie wide receiver Jalen Saunders was involved in what the team called a one-car accident Friday morning on his way to its practice facility in Florham Park, New Jersey, and was taken to a nearby hospital for precautionary monitoring.

AP PhotoRookie wide receiver Jalen Saunders was involved in a one-car accident Friday morning and won't play for the Jets on Saturday night, the team said.

Sgt. Scott Bartel of the Florham Park Police Department, meanwhile, told NJ.com that Saunders had a "medical incident" inside the car. When asked if the rookie was involved in an accident, Bartel told the website, "I don't believe so."

Saunders didn't accompany the team Friday on its trip to Cincinnati, and he won't play Saturday night against the Bengals.

The Jets provided no other details.

The accident occurred near the Jets' facility. During the preseason, the rookies typically stay in a local hotel about a mile from the complex. The team returned to New Jersey on Thursday after spending the first three weeks of training camp in Cortland, New York.

Saunders, a fourth-round pick out of Oklahoma, is expected to make the 53-man roster, primarily because of his punt-returning ability. He's only 5-foot-9, 165 pounds, but he's "a tough little dude," coach Rex Ryan has said.

It has been a tough summer for the Jets' draft class. Third-round cornerback Dexter McDougle suffered a season-ending knee injury in practice; fourth-round wide receiver Shaq Evans hurt his shoulder and could be lost for the season; and first-round safety Calvin Pryor missed the preseason opener with a concussion.
