The New York Giants officially announced coach Tom Coughlin has received a one-year contract extension through the 2012 season, as expected.

Team president and CEO John Mara said at the end of last season that Coughlin would remain as coach and receive an extension after finishing with a 10-win season.

"As I was when I was hired in 2004, I am grateful for the opportunity," Coughlin said. "To be the head coach of the New York Giants is the fulfillment of a dream for somebody who grew up where I grew up and when I grew up.

"As I have said roughly a thousand times, we're all on one-year contracts in this business, but the reality is that I am thankful to work for people like the Maras and the Tisches and with people like (general manager) Jerry Reese and his staff, as well as my coaching staff and our players."

Coughlin's job status came under scrutiny when the team failed to make the postseason after struggling down the stretch for a second straight year.

By keeping Coughlin, who turns 65 next month, and the coaching staff intact -- the only change has been adding Larry Izzo as special teams assistant coach -- the Giants may be in a favorable position to get off to a quick start after the lockout wiped out the entire offseason. Teams with new coaching staffs could struggle with so little time to implement a new system.

"As we said after the season, we strongly believe in Tom," Mara said. "We believe in the job he has done, and we believe in his ability to lead our team in the future. Everybody was on the same page in arriving at the extension."

In seven seasons with the team, Coughlin has posted a regular-season record of 65-47 (.580), which ranks third in Giants history.

Coughlin has a 133 career regular-season victories, third among current NFL coaches, behind the Patriots' Bill Belichick and the Redskins' Mike Shanahan.

"Our players respond to and play hard for Tom," team chairman Steve Tisch said. "We look forward to being able to continue to benefit from Tom's energy and drive and work ethic, all of which are second to none."
