Santonio Holmes on PUP list

As expected, the New York Jets will open training camp Thursday without wide receiver Santonio Holmes, who was placed on the physically unable to perform list Tuesday.

Holmes, who underwent foot surgery in October after a severe Lisfranc injury, can be removed from the PUP list as soon as he's medically cleared to practice. But that might take some time.

The Jets' top playmaker indicated Saturday that he still isn't running at full speed on the field. He's running on a gravity-assisted treadmill without full weight on his foot.

Nevertheless, Holmes remains hopeful that he will be ready for the season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

"[We] definitely have to take our time, and I'll be ready to go when the bell rings," he said.

The Jets, thin at wide receiver, worked out free agents Austin Collie and Laurent Robinson this week. Neither player was signed. They're also mulling the possibility of re-signing Braylon Edwards.

In addition, the Jets placed veteran cornerback Darrin Walls on the non-football injury list.
