EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The New York Giants on Wednesday put running back Andre Brown on injured reserve with a designation for a possible return.

The designation means Brown has to miss at least six weeks of practice and at least eight weeks of games. Because the Giants have a bye in Week 9, that means the earliest Brown will be eligible to play is Week 10 against the Oakland Raiders.

Brown, who fractured his left leg Thursday in the Giants' preseason game at New England, sort of broke the news himself Tuesday on Twitter:

Brown's absence leaves the Giants with just three halfbacks on their roster -- David Wilson, Da'Rel Scott and rookie Michael Cox.

The Giants filled Brown's spot on the 53-man roster Wednesday by signing defensive end Adewale Ojomo from their practice squad for Sunday's opener at Dallas. Offensive lineman Sam Baker was signed to the practice squad.

Ojomo was on the Giants' roster last season but played in only one game. He was waived Saturday in the final cut.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.
