New York Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh is headed to Russia to play for the Kontinental Hockey League's Barys Astana, his agent confirmed to ESPNNewYork.com.

The 23-year-old top-pair blueliner leaves Tuesday evening to join his new club and may be in the lineup as early as Friday.

McDonagh is the third Ranger that has opted to play overseas during the lockout. Rick Nash is playing in Switzerland for Davos, while Swedish winger Carl Hagelin signed with his hometown team, Sodertalje.

Goaltender Henrik Lundqvist has yet to sign with his old club, Frolunda, although he has expressed interest in joining his former team should the work stoppage persist.
