NEW YORK -- A man has admitted shooting into a crowd of spectators and hitting five people amid a fan dispute at a popular New York City basketball tournament.

Ricardo Laing pleaded guilty Thursday to assault and weapons charges in the July 2012 gunfire at the Entertainers Basketball Classic at Harlem's Rucker Park.

The Manhattan district attorney's office sought a 12-year prison term, but a judge promised Laing 10. His sentencing is set for Feb. 13.

Laing's lawyer didn't immediately return a call.

Rucker Park is hallowed ground to fans of pick-up basketball. The tournament has featured a number of professional players.

The 25-year-old Laing was among hundreds of people watching a game. Prosecutors say rival teams' supporters started quarreling, and Laing pulled out a gun and began firing.

The victims survived.
