Ankiel throws complete game for Johnson City

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. -- Rick Ankiel pitched his first
complete game as a professional Sunday night, a three-hitter for
Johnson City of the Appalachian League.

Ankiel, sent to Johnson City to regain his control, struck out
nine while walking one. He also threw a wild pitch in the 6-1 win
over Danville.

Ankiel has 119 strikeouts in 66 innings with Johnson City.

"This (the complete game) is definitely an accomplishment,"
Ankiel said. "I think it's a big step for any pitcher if you can
keep the bullpen out of it. It saves those guys for the next
game."

St. Louis general manager Walt Jocketty was at the game, but
wouldn't comment on when or if Ankiel might be returning to the
Cardinals.
