IRVING, Texas -- Emmitt Smith topped 16,000 yards rushing
for his career Sunday, joining Walter Payton as the only players to
reach the milestone.
Smith surpassed 16,000 yards with an 8-yard run in the first
quarter of Dallas' game against San Francisco. He finished with 126
yards, two shy of the season high he set last week, giving him
16,110 for his career.
Payton rushed for 16,726 yards in 13 seasons.
It was the 74th 100-yard rushing game of Smith's 12-year career.
That ranks third on the career list behind Payton (77) and Barry
With one game left this season, Smith is 56 shy of his NFL
record 11th 1,000-yard season. The only time he didn't have 1,000
yards was as a rookie in 1990.
Smith had 130 total yards Sunday, with a 4-yard reception added
to his rushing total. He has 19,033 total yards joined Payton,
Jerry Rice and Brian Mitchell as the only players with at least
