Rutgers 79, West Virginia 66

1/16/2002

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) _ Rashod Kent snapped out of a scoring
slump with 19 points and Ricky Shields added 21 points as Rutgers
defeated West Virginia 79-66 Wednesday night.
Rutgers (11-6, 2-3 Big East) ended a two-game losing streak and
equaled last season's victory total.
West Virginia (7-8, 0-4) has lost six straight, its longest
losing streak since the 1972-73 team lost seven in a row. It is the
longest Mountaineer losing streak in Gale Catlett's 24 years as
coach.
Kent, who averaged just 5.7 points in the previous six games to
see his scoring average drop to 9.4, had a scare in the game's
opening minutes when his left shoulder hit the floor hard after he
went for a rebound. He quickly re-entered the game and eventually
equaled his season-high in points on 7-for-10 shooting. He also had
13 rebounds, four assists and four steals.
With Rutgers leading 32-31 early in the second half, Kent hit a
layup that started a 20-2 run that gave the Knights a 52-33 lead
with 16:44 remaining. Rutgers shot 9 for 13 in the run.
West Virginia, which is 0-4 in the Big East for the first time
since 1995-96, got within 52-40 with 12:43 remaining.
Rutgers responded with a 19-9 run to open its biggest lead at
71-49 with 6:42 remaining. West Virginia got no closer than 11 the
remainder of the game.
Chris Moss led West Virginia with 24 points and eight rebounds.
Drew Schifino had 14 points, Jonathan Hargett 11 and Lionel
Armstead 10.
Jerome Coleman had 15 points for Rutgers while Herve Lamizana
had five of Rutgers' 10 blocked shots.
