Mark Teixeira sits, says knee is "a little sore''

NEW YORK -- Manager Joe Girardi characterized it as "just a day off'' for Mark Teixeira, which seemed curious considering Teixeira had just missed three weeks with a knee injury, and had played just three games in the minor leagues over the weekend before being reinstated to the New York Yankees roster for Saturday's game against the Twins.

Yoenis Cespedes is an absolute lock to start the All-Star Game. He's actually now the leading vote-getter among National League outfielders by more than 4,000 votes over the Cubs' Dexter Fowler.

Mets vs Nationals - Lineup for Wednesday Night Baseball

Adam Rubin ESPN Staff Writer

Terry Collins acknowledged the Mets need to win on Wednesday night and avoid a sweep in D.C. He noted it would put a better taste in the team's mouth after a subpar road trip. It would mean trailing by four games instead of six games. And, Collins noted, the Mets will return home to face the Cubs for four games. And that will be no picnic.

Curtis Granderson will get his right calf wrapped and do some exercising pregame to allow the Mets to gauge whether he will be in the lineup on Wednesday night. Granderson has success against Max Scherzer, so the preference is he plays, as long as he is physically able. Otherwise, Brandon Nimmo and Alejandro De Aza would man the corner outfield spots.

Alex Rodriguez is back in the Yankees lineup against a right-handed, at least temporarily, as Carlos Beltran sits out with a hamstring injury suffered Monday night. Here's the lineup: Ellsbury cf, Gardner lf, Rodriguez DH, McCann c, Castro 2b, Gregorius ss, Headley 3b, Hicks rf, Refsnyder 1b. Tanaka pitching. Teixeira not in the lineup; we'll find out why from Joe Girardi in a few.

The Yankees are currently 9 games out of first place in the AL East, their largest deficit of the season; have not been closer than 5.5G out since they were 4.5G back on 4/28. Going into their third game of the series against the Rangers tonight, the Yankees have lost 5 consecutive games to Texas at Yankee Stadium dating back to 2015 (0-3 last season).

Giants can't finish any worse... right?

New York's late-game struggles in 2015 were downright historic. The Giants lost four games in which they held leads in the final minute, and they tied an NFL record by blowing three double-digit fourth-quarter leads.
