Joe Girardi stays with Masahiro Tanaka one batter too long

BOSTON -- For 6-1/3 innings, Masahiro Tanaka had the Boston Red Sox under control, limiting them to three singles, one of them an infield hit by David Ortiz, of all the unlikely results, and his pitch count was still just in the 80s.

Darian Thompson had 19 career interceptions at Boise State. "He's very instinctive," Giants coach Ben McAdoo said. "He has tremendous ball skills, but the instincts and the twitch make it happen for him."

Jerry Reese says Darian Thompson is a free safety. "Center fielder, makes the calls, solid tackler."

On Jets QB Christian Hackenberg: Scored a 24 on the Wonderlic test, about average for a quarterback. He has small hands, only 9 inches. It could be a factor in cold weather.

Highlights: Darian Thompson

The Giants bolstered their secondary with the selection of Thompson at No. 71 overall. Check out the safety's film here.

Dan Graziano ESPN Staff Writer

With the 71st pick, the Giants took Boise State safety Darian Thompson. This will be the sixth safety the Giants have picked in the past four drafts, and he doesn't appear to be the surefire starter they've been seeking for the free safety spot. They would have done better to take an offensive or defensive lineman here.

The Giants are on the clock in the third round. After taking a CB and a WR with their first two picks, expect them to look to the trenches here and address either the offensive or defensive lines.

Jets take Hackenberg, muddling QB situation

The Jets used the 51st pick of the draft to take Penn State's Christian Hackenberg, raising questions about the future of quarterbacks Geno Smith, Bryce Petty and Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Rich Cimini ESPN Staff Writer

If the Jets re-sign Ryan Fitzpatrick or another veteran of his ilk, it means the Jets will have four quarterbacks. Can't keep 'em all. Obviously, they don't have much faith in Geno Smith or Bryce Petty. Christian Hackenberg becomes the new golden child.

Bio Blast: Christian Hackenberg

The Jets opted for the Penn State quarterback at No. 51 overall. Hackenberg took 82 sacks in the last two seasons, but cut his interception total from 15 in 2014 to six in 2015.

Matt Bowen ESPN Staff Writer

Really interested to see if Christian Hackenberg can develop in the NFL with the Jets. Plenty of tools to work with. Size too. But a lot of inconsistent play on his college tape.

David Schoenfield ESPN Senior Writer

And as I write that: Yoenis Cespedes clubs a grand slam, giving the Mets 12 runs in the inning -- their biggest in franchise history. Mike Broadway has nothing for the Giants in relief of Jake Peavy but he's going to have to take one for the team.

Rich Cimini ESPN Staff Writer

With the 51st pick, the Jets selected Penn State QB Christian Hackenberg. Not a surprise, but a curious choice. Looks like a reach to me.

David Schoenfield ESPN Senior Writer

Dear broker: How much for Michael Conforto stock? Because I'm buying. He just laced his second hit of the inning. All business up there. And he leads the majors in "hard-hit average." He's looking like a 2016 All-Star.

Rich Cimini ESPN Staff Writer

The Jets are on the clock. Their options: CB Mackensie Alexander, QB Christian Hackenberg, G Cody Whitehair. The Jets did a lot of work on Hackenberg. Will Mike Maccagnan take the QB plunge?

Dan Graziano ESPN Staff Writer

Here are the Giants' picks so far through the second round: 1. Eli Apple, CB, Ohio State; 2. Sterling Shepard, WR, Oklahoma.
