Does the Yankees' Alex Rodriguez have a last act?

One has to wonder if 40-year-old Alex Rodriguez, who has been benched the past two nights, has anything left in the tank after hitting .170 in 2016.

Steven Matz's streak of wins in seven straight starts is over. Matz departed after 5 2/3 innings with a 4-3 lead. But Tyler Saladino belted a two-run homer against Hansel Robles in the eighth to give the White Sox a one-run edge and hand Matz a no-decision. The Mets record remains Frank Viola earning a win in nine straight starts spanning the 1989 and '90 seasons.

Alex Rodriguez declined comment when asked to talk about being out of the lineup for the second straight day. Yankees manager Joe Girardi indicated he had not spoken with A-Rod about the situation.

"If I don't play him, then everyone thinks he is done and I don't necessarily think that," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said of 40-year-old Alex Rodriguez, who is not in the lineup for second straight game. "I still think that he can still be productive for us. I chose to give him a day off yesterday, he played basically six days in a row [counting two minor league rehab games] and [J.A.] Happ has been a tough matchup for him so I chose to give him today off."

Yankee reserve Dustin Ackley is done for the season with a torn labrum, manager Joe Girardi said. Ackley will have shoulder surgery this week. At the moment, the Yankees are sticking with Austin Romine and Chase Headley as the backup first basemen. Rob Refsnyder played a little first in college. Nick Swisher is struggling at Triple-A.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi would not guarantee that Alex Rodriguez will be in the lineup on Wednesday. A-Rod is on the bench Tuesday for the second straight game. Brett Gardner, whom A-Rod is conversing with, is also on the pine against Blue Jays lefty J.A. Happ on Tuesday. A-Rod is hitting .170 on the season.
