Mets vs Nationals - Lineup for Wednesday Night Baseball

Adam Rubin ESPN Staff Writer

Terry Collins acknowledged the Mets need to win on Wednesday night and avoid a sweep in D.C. He noted it would put a better taste in the team's mouth after a subpar road trip. It would mean trailing by four games instead of six games. And, Collins noted, the Mets will return home to face the Cubs for four games. And that will be no picnic.

Curtis Granderson will get his right calf wrapped and do some exercising pregame to allow the Mets to gauge whether he will be in the lineup on Wednesday night. Granderson has success against Max Scherzer, so the preference is he plays, as long as he is physically able. Otherwise, Brandon Nimmo and Alejandro De Aza would man the corner outfield spots.

Alex Rodriguez is back in the Yankees lineup against a right-handed, at least temporarily, as Carlos Beltran sits out with a hamstring injury suffered Monday night. Here's the lineup: Ellsbury cf, Gardner lf, Rodriguez DH, McCann c, Castro 2b, Gregorius ss, Headley 3b, Hicks rf, Refsnyder 1b. Tanaka pitching. Teixeira not in the lineup; we'll find out why from Joe Girardi in a few.

The Yankees are currently 9 games out of first place in the AL East, their largest deficit of the season; have not been closer than 5.5G out since they were 4.5G back on 4/28. Going into their third game of the series against the Rangers tonight, the Yankees have lost 5 consecutive games to Texas at Yankee Stadium dating back to 2015 (0-3 last season).

Giants can't finish any worse... right?

New York's late-game struggles in 2015 were downright historic. The Giants lost four games in which they held leads in the final minute, and they tied an NFL record by blowing three double-digit fourth-quarter leads.

How did Smith make Futures roster?

Keith Law was surprised to see Dominic Smith chosen to the United States' team. Smith is still just 21, but he's having a weak year in Double-A. Law has another Mets prospect in mind that would have been a better choice. Law: Futures roster reaction (Insider)

Jeff Hornacek knows the Knicks need to fill voids at shooting guard and center in free agency but suggests center may be a priority early on. "We don't necessarily need a (shooting guard) who can create a bunch of plays because we should have enough guys who can do that. So when you look at it that way, maybe the (center) may be a little bit more important of a position right now," he said after the Knicks' Summer League practice. On the center front, the Knicks and center Joakim Noah have mutual interest in one another and some in the Knicks' organization have interest in Timofey Mozgov, per sources. The club will have $30 million to spend in free agency so it will be difficult to obtain elite players at both center and shooting guard.

Nationals hand Harvey his 10th loss

Matt Harvey's record dropped to 4-10 with Tuesday's loss to the Nats. The last Mets pitcher to reach 10 losses by the team's 76th game of a season was Anthony Young, who recorded his 10th loss in New York's 73rd game in 1993, the Elias Sports Bureau reports.
