Mets people say other teams are still asking for the moon in trade proposals. Perhaps there will be more progress this weekend, they speculate, once teams get more reasonable.

Forties haven't been kind to A-Rod

Since he turned 40 years old on July 27 last year, Alex Rodriguez has been one of the worst hitters in the majors in terms of batting average.

Birthday boy Alex Rodriguez on still being on a major league roster: "When I first started to play this game, as a a young lad, I never thought I'd be playing in the major leagues for so long; especially at 41," A-Rod said. "I'm representing all the senior citizens." Rodriguez will start the game on the bench Wednesday for the fifth straight time.

So it's done: Ryan Fitzpatrick agrees to a one-year, $12M deal, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. The recent Mo Wilkerson contract created $5.7M in cap room, which made it possible to take a $12 M cap hit for Fitzpatrick. Still surprised, though. A while back, the Jets had no interest in a one-year deal. To me, Fitzpatrick wins.

Alex Rodriguez on turning 41: "I'm getting old," Rodriguez said. "It makes you feel grateful, not a lot of 41-year-olds get to wear a baseball uniform every day. That's one. I definitely feel grateful for health, family, friends and just the opportunity to wear pinstripes."

Yankees manager Joe Girardi is apparently not sentimental when it comes to birthdays. Alex Rodriguez turned 41 on Wednesday, but did not get a spot in the lineup against righty Lance McCullers. It is not a surprise as Girardi planned to DH Carlos Beltran all three games here in Houston. It is the fifth game in a row Rodriguez has been benched.

The deal is done. No, not Ryan Fitzpatrick. We're talking about Darron Lee. The Jets have agreed to terms with Lee, as Adam Schefter reported. It's a four-year, $10.2 million contract. They got it done in time for the former Ohio State star to participate in the first practice tomorrow. He was one of three unsigned first rounders.

Jose Reyes says he hopes the strained intercostal muscle on his left side only sidelines him for a short period. He injured it swinging on a comebacker to the pitcher in Game 1 of Tuesday's doubleheader. Wilmer Flores will handle third base for the time being.
