Nothing is done yet but some members of the Knicks' organization told people earlier in the day that they expect to have at least $11 million available if and when the deal for Joakim Noah is finalized. Members of the Knicks' organization, including Phil Jackson and Steve Mills, are meeting with Joakim Noah in an Orlando-area hotel at the moment. Most of the remaining cap space is expected to be used on a shooting guard. The Knicks' available space can increase, of course, if they get rid of some players on the roster.

From Jay Paris on-site in San Diego for ESPN.com: Yankees outfielder Carlos Beltran will be idle this weekend in San Diego. "He's improving," manager Joe Girardi said. "He's just not where he needs to be.'' Beltran's sore right hamstring had him out Friday against the San Diego Padres. He could be down the next two games, too. "I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't play,'' Girardi said. Beltran walked as a pinch-hitter in Thursday's win over the Rangers. He didn't play Wednesday, one day after getting hurt. "As I've said the last few days this was what worried me that he would have to play the field,'' Girardi said. "If he was DHing, it might be a little bit quicker. But we have to make sure he is OK.''

Buddy Ryan remembered by former players

Buddy Ryan was remembered not just as a defensive master who won two Super Bowls and spawned a legacy carried on by players and twin sons now coaching in the NFL.

David Wright, at Citi Field, says he will play again. It did not sound realistic that he will play this season, though. He said he will lose about 5 percent mobility because of the fusion surgery, but suggested that would be a non-issue and the neck otherwise should be as good as new. He had a significant rupture to a disk that needed to be removed, as well as fragments that needed to come out. He said he did not have a problem with the Mets showing interest in a long-term third baseman, Yulieski Gourriel. Wright said he will watch home games from the bullpen because he cannot be bumped and is helpless to defend himself in the dugout.

The New York Islanders made the Andrew Ladd deal official. "Andrew is a highly skilled, versatile, heart-and-soul type of player and we're thrilled to welcome him to the Islanders organization," said GM Garth Snow. "He's a leader and proven winner who will help our team continue to build towards a Stanley Cup championship."

Maybe Zen will trump hard numbers

If the Knicks sign Joakim Noah as reported after acquiring Derrick Rose last week, ESPN Stats & Info notes they'll have added two of the least efficient players during the past NBA season. Noah's effective field-goal percentage of 38.3 percent was the worst in the league. Rose had the third-fewest win shares for players who logged at least 2,000 minutes (0.4).
