Will Mets step up at deadline again?

Fifty-one weeks ago, the acquisition of Yoenis Cespedes allowed New York to play into November. The Mets would upgrade behind the plate with Jonathan Lucroy, but Jim Bowden lists them second on his list of likely landing spots if the Brewers trade him. Top trade targets/best fits (Insider)

Here is what Aroldis Chapman told me when I asked him whether he wanted to finish the season with the Yankees: "Yes, that's what I would want to happen… but these rumors are getting pretty strong!"

AL market strong for Carlos Beltran

The 39-year-old switch-hitter has put together a surprisingly strong season at the plate while still playing most games in the field. Jim Bowden likes the option of regularly DH'ing Beltran and sees Cleveland as the most likely landing spot. Top trade targets/best fits (Insider)

Why Michael Bennett is frustrated

It's easy to understand why Bennett wants more money from the Seahawks. Several recent contracts for D-linemen have featured guarantees more than three times what Bennett received on his current deal.

Here is scouting report on Gleyber Torres: Torres: Future All Star: Plus defender with good hitting instincts/advanced approach for age, improving offensive value....solid average hitter.....more power than people think 15-18 HR potential Great hand-eye coordination ..Avg runner but better underway, plus defender with plus arm. Cubs best prospect not in major leagues.

So when this Yankees, Cubs deal is completed today...this is what we'll know: 1. Cubs remain team to beat and favorite to win World Series as Chapman is a difference maker in post-season because of ability to shut down Bryce Harper, Daniel Murphy of Nats and lefty lineup of Giants. 2. Yankees got Cubs best prospect not in big leagues and potential future all star. 3. Yankees got far more for Chapman and I mean far more than what they gave up to get him. Facing Las Vegas in his second start since a demotion from the Diamondbacks, Shelby Miller allowed four runs (three earned) on nine hits and one walk in five innings on Sunday for Reno. Brandon Nimmo had a fifth-inning solo homer against Miller.

The Yankees are 36-3 when leading after six innings this year. They were 66-3 last year, according to ESPN's Stats and Info's Megan O'Donnell. In other words, Aroldis Chapman has put on a show in the 9th, but he hasn't really made the Yankees better.

Melo was chairman of USA boards

Carmelo Anthony grabbed a game-high eight rebounds playing 17:32 during Team USA's 106-57 win over China on Sunday night. Anthony scored five points, going 2-for-9 from the floor, and had five assists. Box score

Sources: Yankees, Cubs talking Chapman deal

The Cubs and Yankees are in talks to send pitcher Aroldis Chapman to Chicago in exchange for top-rated prospect Gleyber Torres, according to multiple sources familiar with the discussions.

Teixeira goes yard early

Mark Teixeira drove a 425-foot home run to straight-away center field at Yankee Stadium during the second inning against the Giants on Sunday. The homer was his longest since almost a year ago -- July 30, 2015.

Andrew Marchand ESPN Senior Writer

Gleyber Torres is a 19-year-old shortstop in the Cubs' system. He is hitting .275 with 9 homers and 47 RBIs at Single-A. He has a .791 OPS. Colleague Buster Olney reported the Yankees are high on him, making him a possible target in an Aroldis Chapman trade. If the Yankees were to make a deal for Torres, it would demonstrate their commitment to adding overall talent to the organization instead of just looking for certain positions since shortstop is a franchise strength led by Didi Gregorius.
