When the Rockies designated José Reyes for assignment, GM Jeff Bridich said it was "the best decision in every way for the organization".
I asked Mets GM Sandy Alderson today whether it was the best decision for the Mets to sign Reyes. He actually answered the question.
"Do I think this is in the best interest of the Mets at this time, and in the best interest of José? Yes. We don't know what José will contribute on the field, but we think he can. At the same time, trying to put aside issues of performance and talent, which is the bottom-line of what this is all about, we have done everything we can to consider the other issues and made ourselves comfortable that he understands the mistake he made and has taken responsibility for it. But at the same time, he doesn't deserve to be ostracized. Other people will have a different point of view. That would be true under any situation that somebody makes a mistake. You can't throw away the key. That's not how we have chosen to address this. Do I think this is in the best interest of the Mets? Yes, I do."
