Brandon Marshall's bet is risky

Antonio Brown appears willing to take Marshall's wager on who will have more receiving yards in 2016, and rightfully so. Both had huge seasons in 2015, but Brown had 332 more receiving yards despite some inconsistency at QB.

Thomas Robinson could go overseas

Robinson, one of two former Kansas stars looking for a new team, averaged 14.1 rebounds per 36 minutes in Brooklyn. But Kevin Pelton cites his real plus-minus as a reason why he may be headed overseas. Pelton: 10 best free agents (Insider)

New Saints WR Hakeem Nicks admitted that he was texting Sean Payton every week since his spring visit. Nicks said he's had to fight injuries in his career, including last year with Titans. But he said that just adds to the chip in his shoulder. Also said he's taken time to try and "learn the business," study offenses and try to figure out why he had most of his success early in his career with Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi has emphasized the importance of Carlos Beltran to this year's team. Girardi said the other day it is difficult to take any team's best hitter off a club and expect similar results. It is becoming increasingly clear that some decision-makers in the organization look at trading Beltran as essentially waving the white flag.

Will Mets make or miss playoffs?

The Mets are part of a tight NL wild-card race, but injuries and an inability to hit with runners in scoring position could be their undoing.

Will Shane Larkin find a fourth team?

Larkin has played for three teams in three years, but he's still just 23 years old with the potential to develop into a capable backup point guard. Kevin Pelton names Houston as a possible fit. Pelton: 10 best free agents (Insider)

New York Mets just can't hold on

Wednesday and Thursday's defeats mark the second time in Mets history that they lost two consecutive games in the ninth inning after taking a lead into the final inning in each game, the Elias Sports Bureau reports. The other time it happened was against the Cubs at Shea Stadium on Sept. 17–18, 1983.

Donatas Motiejunas a good fit for Nets?

If healthy, Motiejunas is a capable post scorer who can also stretch the floor, notes Kevin Pelton. The Nets, particularly if they would like to move Brook Lopez, are a possible destination. Pelton: 10 best free agents (Insider)

How historically poor have the Mets been by hitting .204 with runners in scoring position this season? Well, the last team to finish a season with a lower average with RISP was the 1969 San Diego Padres at .201. They went 52-110 that year.

I have heard the Mets have no intention of trading Double-A prospects Amed Rosario and Dominic Smith. As for the Brewers and Jonathan Lucroy, Milwaukee officials came back to the Mets on Thursday with a proposal that was not out-of-hand rejected. The Mets previously had believed any chance of landing Lucroy was dead. Still, Mets personnel don't have a handle on whether Milwaukee's interest in a deal with them is genuine or being used to drive up bids elsewhere for Lucroy.

I'm hearing there is nothing imminent with the Mets involving a trade. So if anything materializes, and there are no guarantees, it is a lot more likely to come closer to Monday's 4 p.m. ET non-waiver trade deadline. Remember, the Mets acquired Addison Reed last year in August via a waiver deal.

In a December interview with Today's Fastbreak that was published Friday, Phil Jackson notes that rookie Kristaps Porzingis was making "huge strides" but was also missing makeable shots because he had a propensity to dribble into a crowd rather than pull up for a jump shot. Jackson also noted that the Knicks should have found more playing time for Derrick Williams, who declined his player option with New York this summer and signed with Miami. Lastly, Jackson pointed out that teams were going underneath screens set for Jerian Grant because of his unreliable jump shot. Grant was eventually dealt to Chicago in the Derrick Rose trade.

In a December interview with Today's Fastbreak that was published today, Phil Jackson mentioned that Derek Fisher wanted to push the pace on offense, in part, because the Knicks were struggling with the triangle. Fisher not running the offense the way Jackson and others saw fit was a source of consternation between coach and president last season. It probably wasn't the reason Fisher was ultimately fired, but it probably contributed to Jackson making the decision. That's worth remembering now as Jeff Hornacek looks to blend an up-tempo approach with the triangle offense.
