Although Zack Wheeler had tentatively been expected to face batters this week for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery, that did not occur. Manager Terry Collins said there has been no setback with Wheeler. Regardless, it looks like Wheeler will be back no earlier than September -- if then. Once Wheeler throws batting practice for the first time, he still is about 10 days away from a minor-league rehab assignment that could last for as long as a month. Logan Verrett has capably stepped into the rotation spot formerly occupied by Matt Harvey as the Mets bide time for Wheeler to return.

The Giants signed DTs Jermelle Cudjo and Davon Coleman. They waive WR Donte Foster and DT Melvin Lewis. Lewis was on NFI. Move was necessary with DTs Damon Harrison and Jay Bromley not practicing and on PUP.

In promoting the lefty-hitting Brandon Nimmo, the Mets concluded they did not have an attractive righty-hitting option who could play center field. They considered promoting 27-year-old Travis Taijeron, who is hitting .297 with 15 homers and 73 RBIs in 347 at-bats with Las Vegas. But they were dissuaded because Taijeron has 122 strikeouts -- the third-highest total in the Pacific Coast League -- and might have difficulty making contact at the major league level.

What to make of Big Blue in the red zone

Jets practice recap: Terrific day by Ryan Fitzpatrick (23-for-26). Who needs OTAs? Three nice deep balls by Geno Smith. Only blemish was an interception with 20 seconds on the clock in a hurry-up situation. Kenbrell Tbompkins, on his 28th birthday, was everywhere. Rookie WR Jalin Marshall is turning heads.

Odell Beckham Jr. A superstar from Day 1

The Giants' top wideout has been one of the league's best since he was drafted in 2014. No wide receiver has more TD catches than his 25 over the last two seasons.

There's a reason why you won't find Matt Forte in this running-back drill at Jets camp. The former Bears star already is nursing a hamstring injury.
