Although Zack Wheeler had tentatively been expected to face batters this week for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery, that did not occur. Manager Terry Collins said there has been no setback with Wheeler. Regardless, it looks like Wheeler will be back no earlier than September -- if then. Once Wheeler throws batting practice for the first time, he still is about 10 days away from a minor-league rehab assignment that could last for as long as a month. Logan Verrett has capably stepped into the rotation spot formerly occupied by Matt Harvey as the Mets bide time for Wheeler to return.
