Melo was the man in third quarter

Carmelo Anthony scored 16 of his 20 points in Team USA's 107-57 rout of China on Tuesday night during the third period. He's averaging 14 points through the first three games of the Americans' five-game Rio warm-up tour. Box score

Dilson Herrera actually slept funny on the bus from Las Vegas to Fresno and was scratched from the PCL game on Tuesday for that reason. It was just a coincidence in timing that he was scratched nearly simultaneously with Jose Reyes' intercostal injury, I'm told.

The Jets report to training camp and there's no sign of QB Ryan Fitzpatrick, who remains far apart with the team on a new contract, according to ESPN's Ed Werder. First-round pick Darron Lee also remains unsigned as the two sides haggle over guaranteed money in the fourth year.

Dilson Herrera was in Las Vegas' original lineup on Tuesday night at Fresno and was scratched. So it would seem that if Jose Reyes requires a DL stint for an intercostal strain suffered in Game 1 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Cardinals, Herrera is the likely call-up.

The Cardinals forced Noah Syndergaard to throw 115 pitches in Tuesday's loss and though his fastball velocity matched his season average (98 mph), his 64 percent fastball strike rate was his third-lowest of 2016. In fact, his three lowest fastball strike rates have come in his last three starts. Manager Terry Collins didn't know why Syndergaard was having pitch-count issues. "If we knew, we'd address it," he said. Collins did say Syndergaard was working with pitching coach Dan Warthen on one pitch grip, but didn't specify which pitch.

Mets manager had no problem with Curtis Granderson's decision to try for second base on Yoenis Cespedes' fly out in the ninth inning. Granderson was thrown out by Cardinals center fielder Tommy Pham and one out later, the mets had a tough one-run loss. "The guy needed to make a perfect throw and he did," Collins said. Collins also didn't take issue with third base coach Tim Teufel holding Jose Reyes at third base on Cespedes' double earlier in the game. "Tim had a better angle than anybody. It's his call."
