Mike Pelfrey, Mets avoid arbitration

Right-handed starter Mike Pelfrey has agreed to a contract with the New York Mets, avoiding salary arbitration.

The deal will pay Pelfrey $3.925 million during the upcoming season. He can earn another $50,000 in performance bonuses: $12,500 each for 200 and 205 innings, and $25,000 for 210.

Pelfrey, who turned 27 last Friday, made $3.3 million in 2009 as part of his original deal after signing as a first-round pick in 2005. But he did not yet have enough service time last ...
