Steve Lavin undergoes surgery

NEW YORK -- St. John's men's basketball coach Steve Lavin had surgery to treat his prostate cancer on Thursday, the school announced late Thursday.

The procedure went as planned, with no complications, according to Lavin's doctors. He is expected to return to coaching full-time after an unspecified recovery period.

St. John's is scheduled to begin regular season practices on Friday, Oct. 14.
