Derek Jeter out 4-5 months

DETROIT -- Derek Jeter's ability to be ready for Opening Day next season is in question after the New York Yankees' 38-year-old shortstop elected to have surgery on his broken ankle that will require four to five months of recovery time.

The prognosis, announced in a news release put out by the Yankees on Wednesday afternoon, represents a significant change from the first reports that said Jeter would need three months to recover and would be ready for the start of spring training.
