First Baseman: Hal Chase

Before they were the Yankees, they were the Highlanders -- and Prince Hal (left, pictured with Giants skipper John McGraw) was their homegrown superstar. A superior defensive first baseman and one of the game's most notorious gamblers, Chase's career was pockmarked with controversy and suspension. By the time the dust had settled from the Black Sox scandal -- Chase was accused of being involved in and profiting from the throwing of the 1919 World Series -- he was no longer welcome in the big leagues. Though he was never "officially" banned from baseball, he never played in the majors again. --Matt Marrone
