EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- This one was all about rookie
prospects -- Chris Redman for the Ravens and Ron Dayne and Ron Dixon
for the Giants.
Redman, the third-round choice Baltimore hopes can be its
quarterback of the future, rallied the Ravens to 24 points in the
second half in a 24-17 victory over New York on Friday night.

He threw touchdown passes of 28 yards to Germany Thompson and 4
yards to Ryan Collins to help the Ravens (4-0) win their 12th
straight exhibition game over three years.
"This may be the last game I play in this season, so it was
like my Super Bowl," said Redman, the former Louisville star who
finished 14-of-18 for 158 yards. "It's definitely been a learning
process. A game like tonight is a great way to end the preseason
for me."
Dayne and Dixon, meanwhile, shone for the Giants (0-4), who
finished winless in preseason for the first time since 1971 despite
entering the game first in the NFL in offense and fourth on
defense. With starters for both teams playing little more than a
quarter, New York dominated the first half and led 10-0 at
intermission.
But as with many preseason games, it was an audition for
rookies.
Dayne, the Heisman Trophy winner at Wisconsin, carried 15 times
for 60 yards and scored his first professional touchdown on a
5-yard run in the first quarter. Dixon, New York's surprise
third-round pick from little Lambuth College in Tennessee, returned
a kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter and had two
receptions that set up a second-quarter field goal.
"I think he's gotten better throughout the preseason," Giants
coach Jim Fassel said of Dayne. "I want to work him more. He had a
few screwups. We'll work on those."
"I think I feel a lot more comfortable now," said Dayne, who
finished the exhibition season with 211 yards in 61 carries. "I
have a lot to learn even when I go out and play to the best of my
ability."
Redman took over in the second half against New York's second-
and third-stringers and dominated where Tony Banks and Trent Dilfer
had failed in the first half.
Redman drove the Ravens 61 yards in six plays at the start of
the half, capping it with the 28-yard TD to Thompson that made it
10-7.
Then, after Dixon returning the ensuing kickoff for his score,
he led the Ravens to 17 straight points. The winning TD, which came
with 3:40 left came on a 3-yard run by rookie Jason Brookins after
a 35-yard pass-interference call against New York's Emmanuel
McDaniel.
But that didn't fool the Ravens' veterans.
"Our first team offense has to be a lot more consistent. At
best, thus far, we've been sporadic," said Shannon Sharpe, the
Ravens' new tight end.
The Giants took a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter on a
drive that was almost all Dayne.
After Tiki Barber returned a punt 31 yards to the Ravens' 39,
Dayne carried three straight times to the 25. Kerry Collins then
hit Ike Hilliard for 20 yards and Dayne carried it in from the 5.
Brad Daluiso's 34-yard field goal with 3 seconds left in the
half made it 10-0. It was set up by two passes from Jason Garrett
to Dixon, one for 18 yards and the other for 21.
Another top prospect for the Ravens, first-round pick Jamal
Lewis, saw his first action of the preseason. He gained 9 yards on
four carries, all against New York's first-team defense.
"It was good to get him some time in a game," coach Brian
Billick said. "I think that will help him as we move into the
regular season."
