I can confirm that it's a back injury that has kept Bucs and former Seahawks guard J.R. Sweezy out for the offseason program and has landed him on the Active/PUP List. He was brought in to help fill the void left by Logan Mankins' retirement.

The Bucs waived offensive guard Garrett Gilkey after a failed physical. Safety Elijah Shumate has also been placed on the Active/Non-Football Injury List.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have signed former Ohio State offensive and defensive lineman Joel Hale, who attended rookie minicamp on a tryout basis. He'll play offensive line for the Bucs and spent rookie camp at the center position.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have placed wide receiver Louis Murphy and guard J.R. Sweezy on the active/PUP list. Murphy is recovering from a torn ACL while Sweezy underwent an undisclosed medical procedure that forced him to miss the entire offseason program.

Devin Hester told me "yes sir" when asked if he wants to continue his NFL career. He politely declined to discuss his release from the Falcons.

Bengals placed three on the active/PUP list: DT Brandon Thompson, TE Tyler Eifert, WR James Wright. They also placed LB Rey Maualuga on the non-football injury list. Rookies DE Dezmond Johnson and RB DyShawn Mobley were released, and Canadian WR Rashaun Simonise was formally signed today, as well.

The Dolphins are deep at other areas, but not at cornerback. That is one position where Miami can't afford any bad breaks. There's no proven depth behind No. 1 CB Byron Maxwell. But Xavien Howard showed plenty of promise before his injury.

James Walker ESPN Staff Writer

The good news with Dolphins rookie CB Xavien Howard's knee injury/scope is he's expected back for the regular season. However, the second-round pick will miss most (or all) of training camp, which was important for Howard's development.

Josh Weinfuss ESPN Staff Writer

The Arizona Cardinals placed S Tyrann Mathieu (knee), DT Frostee Rucker (foot), CB Justin Bethel (foot) and LB Zack Wagenmann (foot) on the active/PUP list. The Cardinals report to training camp Thursday.

Former Bears, Bucs coach Lovie Smith on whether Devin Hester is a Hall of Famer: "Yes. Absolutely. When you are the best to ever play that position in the NFL, you should end up in the Hall of Fame. He changed the way the game was played." Hester, 33, was released by the Falcons Tuesday, and his immediate plans remain unclear.

WR Josh Gordon is set and scheduled to report to the Browns today. The process of getting him ready to practice begins.
