Charles, a 2011 AFCA All-American rated by ESPN Scouts Inc. as the 38th-best prospect overall and No. 2 prospect at tight end in this year's NFL draft, was charged with driving under the influence and impeding traffic flow by Athens-Clarke County Police after being stopped at approximately 3 a.m. ET.
Charles was stopped in the roadway at South Milledge Avenue and Morton Avenue when a police officer pulled up behind him to check if his vehicle was disabled, according to the police report. Charles then began to drive away and the officer followed him a short distance before pulling over the vehicle, according to the report.
Charles submitted to sobriety tests, registered a .095 blood alcohol level and was arrested for DUI, according to the report. He was booked into Clarke County Jail at 4:31 a.m. and released on $1,750 bond at 5:29 a.m.
It was not immediately clear whether Charles had an attorney. He did not have a phone listing.
A passenger in the car with Charles was not identified. Charles, 21, announced in January that he would leave Georgia after a standout junior season in which he was a finalist for the John Mackey Award, awarded yearly to the nation's top college tight end.
Charles had 45 catches for 574 yards and five touchdowns last season. He completed his career with 10 touchdown catches, tying him for Georgia's all-time record for TDs by a tight end.
