Archer clocked the second-fastest time in the 40-yard dash since the NFL began officially recording times in 1999.
The 5-foot-8 Archer had predicted before his combine workout that he would break the record held by Johnson, who clocked a record 4.24 seconds in the dash in 2008.
Johnson took to Twitter on Sunday after Archer's official time was posted, acknowledging that he had been "nervous."
Archer served as an all-purpose threat this past season at Kent State, gaining 854 yards from scrimmage and scoring 11 touchdowns. He had a big junior season, rushing for 1,429 yards and scoring 23 touchdowns.
