Research Notes

  • Peyton Manning and John Elway have a lot in common. Both were drafted 1st overall by the Colts (in different cities)Both have same number of postseason (14) and Super Bowl wins (2).Peyton surpassed Elway as the oldest QB to win a Super Bowl, and could 1 day join him as only Hall of Fame QBs to win Super Bowl in final start, pending his future plans. And with 200 wins Manning breaks a tie with Brett Favre for most wins by a quarterback all-time, including postseason.

  • Von Miller is the only player with 5 sacks and an interception in a single postseason since sacks were officially tracked in 1982 (confirmed by Elias)

  • Denver's defense and special teams combined to contributed about 31 points to its 14-point scoring margin; the Broncos offense, on the other hand, cost the team about 17 points in Super Bowl 50.

  • Peyton Manning had a 9.9 Total QBR in Super Bowl 50. Entering the game, QBs who posted a QBR lower than 10 were 3-25 this season including the postseason (min. 15 action plays)

  • Peyton Manning was 1-of-5 for 22 yards when targeting receivers who lined up across from Josh Norman at the snap of the ball, with Norman nearly intercepting 2 of the passes. Manning's one such completion came to Andre Caldwell on the first offensive series of the game. Peyton Manning was 12-of-18 for 119 yards when targeting receivers who lined up across from any Panthers defender other than Josh Norman at the snap.

  • Newton was particularly off-target on intermediate throws. He was 3-of-18 (16.7%) with an interception on throws between 11 and 20 yards downfield Sunday, the worst completion percentage on such throws in Super Bowl history (min. 10 att) and the worst of Newton's career. Seven of his 15 incompletions on throws of that distance were due to overthrown passes. In his previous 2 games this postseason, Newton was 8-of-11 (72.7%) with a touchdown on throws between 11 and 20 yards downfield.

  • Peyton Manning completed 3-of-8 third-down passes for 23 yards and an interception. Manning was also sacked twice on third down, losing 18 yards on those plays. His 0.5 yards per dropback on third down is the lowest average for a Super Bowl-winning quarterback in the last 10 seasons. Manning's 2.9 yards per pass attempt average on third down is the lowest by a Super Bowl winning QB since Tom Brady in Super Bowl XXXVI (1.6).- All 5 of Manning's career interceptions in Super Bowl play were on 3rd down. No other player has more than 3 interceptions on 3rd down in Super Bowl play.

  • Cam Newton had 10 overthrown passes Sunday, tied for the most in Super Bowl history (Jim Kelly in Super Bowl XXVI and Stan Humphries in Super Bowl XXIX). Newton's 10 overthrows are also the second most of his career (11 in Week of 2011 vs Falcons). Of the 9 quarterbacks that threw at least 7 overthrown passes in a Super Bowl, all 9 lost the game.Newton had 11 total off-target passes (overthrown or underthrown), tied for his most this season (Week 8 vs Colts) and the most by any Super Bowl quarterback since Stan Humphries had 12 in Super Bowl XXIX.

  • Cam Newton was blitzed 25 times in Super Bowl 50, the 2nd-most blitzes faced in Super Bowl history (Jim Kelly faced 30 in Super Bowl XXVI.

  • Cam Newton's 10 overthrown passes are tied for the most in Super Bowl history (Jim Kelly in Super Bowl XXVI and Stan Humphries in Super Bowl XXIX).Newton's 10 overthrows are the second most of his career (11 in Week 14 of 2011 vs Falcons).

  • Cam Newton finished 1-of-12 with 4 sacks taken and 2 fumbles on plays where both DeMarcus Ware and Von Miller rushed the passer Sunday.

  • Among the 5 teams to win at least 15 games in a regular season under the current playoff format (since 1990), NONE won a Super Bowl

  • Von Miller now has 6.5 sacks in his playoff career, the most in Broncos history. He's the 1st Broncos player to record multiple sacks in a Super Bowl.

  • Kony Ealy is the 1st player in NFL history to have 2 sacks and an interception in the Super Bowl
