The pins will be removed from the foot in 8-10 weeks, but doctors recommended that Staley sit out the rest of the season, the agent, Brantley Evans, told Clayton.
The Eagles placed Staley on injured reserve and signed running back Amp Lee to fill their empty roster spot.
Staley injured his right foot in the Eagles' 38-10 victory over Atlanta on Oct. 1.
Without Staley, Philadelphia's running backs had 36 yards on 13 carries in Sunday's 17-14 loss to Washington. Quarterback Donovan McNabb led the team with 43 yards rushing.
Staley rushed for more than 1,000 yards in consecutive seasons, but he struggled after opening this season with a 201-yard performance against Dallas. Staley had 143 yards on 53 carries in his past four games.
He had started 29 straight games and hadn't missed one in four seasons before Sunday.
