Power Rankings: The Dallas-Green Bay debate

Week:
By Mike McAllister

Since the Cowboys and Packers have emerged as the class of the NFC, the general assumption is that Dallas is the slightly better team. Certainly our Power Rankings have reflected that; it's also helps explain why the Cowboys enter Thursday's showdown at Texas Stadium as a touchdown favorite.

ESPN.com's Power Rankings
The rankings were determined by a poll of ESPN.com's NFL staff: writers John Clayton, Len Pasquarelli, Matt Mosley, Jeffri Chadiha and Mike Sando; Scouts Inc. Insiders Jeremy Green and Keith Kidd; and ESPN.com NFL senior editor Mike McAllister.

But not everybody is convinced. Unlike our other seven voters, Scouts Inc.'s Jeremy Green ranks the Packers at No. 2, ahead of the Cowboys at No. 3 -- and no, not because of the common element in their names.

Said Green: "Green Bay is the more complete football team right now. The only question I had with Green Bay was could they run the ball? Once they proved they could do that, I was sold."

Of course, the easy argument from the Cowboys' perspective is to take a look not at the opponents each team has beaten, but the lone opponent each team has lost to.

For the Cowboys, losing to the undefeated Patriots, even at home, is nothing to be ashamed of this season. For the Packers, losing to the 5-6 Bears at home is less excusable, even though it's one of those throw-the-records-out-the-window rivalries.

Green isn't looking at schedule comparisons, though, but rather the old-fashioned one: head-to-head. And right now, he thinks the Packers are the better team.

"Green Bay can do a lot of things the Patriots do," he said. "Spread out the Dallas D and force [safeties Ken] Hamlin and [Roy] Williams into coverage. That is a plus for any offense that can do that to Dallas because neither one of those guys can cover anyone."

Of course, by Thursday night, we'll know for sure which team is better. But for now, where would you rank the Cowboys and Packers after Week 12? Click here to access SportsNation's ranking tool.

BIGGEST RISE: New Orleans Saints from 20th to 13th. BIGGEST DROP: New York Giants from 6th to 11th.
