Ranking the first four teams a month into the season is a relatively easy process -- it just requires finding the teams with a spotless record. But what about the second-tier teams, the ones with a single loss? Those teams may have gotten off to good starts, but have they really shown their true colors? Is there a this year's version of the 2006 Saints, who were 3-1 in the first four weeks and eventually reached the NFC title game?

ESPN.com's Power Rankings
The rankings were determined by a poll of ESPN.com's NFL staff -- writers John Clayton, Len Pasquarelli, Matt Mosley, Jeffri Chadiha and Mike Sando; Scouts Inc. Insiders Jeremy Green and Keith Kidd; and ESPN.com NFL senior editor Mike McAllister.

Of the 3-1 teams, the Seahawks are perhaps the most proven commodity because of their recent track record. Yes, they've sputtered at times, but their one loss came at Arizona, a place where the previously undefeated Steelers lost last weekend. The Steelers host the Seahawks, by the way, in a battle of 3-1s on Sunday.

Of the other 3-1 teams, voters are most skeptical of the Lions, rightly so given the 56-21 loss to the Eagles two weeks ago.

Some skepticism also remains about the Redskins, one of three 2-1 teams in the league. That's why Sunday's matchup in Washington against the Lions will be intriguing, as it may help identify which of those teams is the more legitimate playoff contender in the NFC.

Of the other 2-1 teams, Tennessee has a slight edge on Jacksonville, due in large part to a 13-10 win over the Jaguars in the season opener. The Titans' Oct. 14 matchup against 3-1 Tampa Bay will provide a clearer picture.
